The way Arizona’s congressional districts were drawn had its day before the U.S. Supreme Court. Now the state's legislative districts will be considered as well.
The high court has approved a motion to consider whether the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission violated the U.S. Constitution when it drew legislative lines in 2010. The plaintiffs in the case of Harris v. Independent Redistricting Commission argue that districts— three in particular— were designed to benefit Democrats. The Commission says it had to use population deviations in a few situations in order to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act.
Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich will be part of the plaintiffs’ team at the Supreme Court. It’ll be Brnovich’s first time arguing before the high court. Secretary of State Michele Reagan will also take part. The Commission is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice. The oral arguments will be presented on December 8th.
