A proposed settlement could put to rest a class action lawsuit against the Maricopa County Community College District following a major data breach two years ago.
The 2013 hack exposed the personal identity information of about 2.4 million people associated with the community colleges as students, employees or vendors.
Most recent numbers show the district has spent more than $17 million in the wake of the breach.
Tom Gariepy, a spokesperson for the district, said the settlement offers a year of free credit monitoring for those affected.
“The best estimate right now, based on the number of people that signed up for credit monitoring in the past, would be somewhere around a million and a half dollars,” he said.
Gariepy said the district continues to take steps to address the cyber security issues that led to the breach.
