The end is officially in sight. After two years of heavy construction, an opening date was finally announced for the three mile northwest extension of the Phoenix Metro Light Rail.

On March 19, 2016, the light rail along 19 th Avenue from Bethany Home Road to Dunlap Avenue will start carrying passengers. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton made the announcement Thursday morning. Valley Metro is currently testing the trains and will continue up until the opening of the line.

Phase Two of the Northwest extension will travel to Metrocenter Mall, though no start date has been set.
