Today is the last day for most Arizonans to sign up for health insurance coverage starting in January. This is the third open enrollment cycle through the federal health insurance marketplace.
More than 60,000 Arizonans have signed up so far this year, according to Enroll America. That figure includes people enrolling for the first time and those who are renewing their plans. Montserrat Caballero is the Arizona state director of Enroll America, the non-profit health care enrollment coalition.
“We actually have more people that have shopped and renewed this year than at the same time last year," Caballero said. "We do know that people that enrolled either the first year or the second year do continue to renew their coverage.”
The penalty for not having health insurance will increase next year to $695 or 2.5 percent of a household’s income. The final deadline to sign up for 2016 coverage is January 31.
