Down the wide aisles of the Glendale-area casino.

The Tohono O’odham Nation’s West Valley casino opens on Sunday - it has been, and continues to be at the center of controversy.

When the southern Arizona tribe bought the land near Glendale in 2003, it did so under a different corporate name. When it announced plans to build a Las Vegas-style resort and casino there critics argued that went against the voter-approved gaming compact of 2002.

That was the subject of just one of the lawsuits that’s worked, or is working, its way through the court system on this tribal casino development. Howie Fischer of Capitol Media Services explained the issues.

Pending lawsuits aside, the Desert Diamond Casino West Valley is set to open. KJZZ’s Casey Kuhn has been to the casino.
