A billboard reading “Paying for sex can get you flagged ... for the rest of your life” is being featured in New York City.

Just before Arizona hosts the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in Glendale, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich is appearing on those billboards in New York’s Time Square.

The effort is to remind people that paying for sex could land you in jail.

Brnovich said the billboards are timely, appearing before the high profile events taking place in the state.

“This is something that, when there’s big sporting events, we see a spike, we want to make sure that we’re addressing it. But, it’s frankly something that goes on even when there’s not major sporting events. So, we need to be vigilant at all times,” he said.

According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center there was a 27-percent increase in the number of human trafficking cases reported in Arizona to law enforcement between 2014 and 2015.

Brnovich said he’s hoping with the national attention the billboard can bring, it will make a difference in more than just the state he represents.

“This is not only an Arizona issue, but a national issue. And if we can do that in in conjunction with the National College Football Championship game being here, it’s something that’s a worthwhile cause and it’s something that we need to bring attention to,” Brnovich said.

The billboard will appear in New York City, as well as at Glendale’s Westgate Entertainment District.
