Several corrections officers are suing Arizona and prisons director Charles Ryan. The suit contends prison conditions led to assaults and injuries.
A corrections officer who was nearly raped by an inmate in Yuma is one of eight officers involved in the suit, which was filed in Maricopa Superior Court. The suit lists under-staffing, poor maintenance and other factors put corrections officers at risk. It seeks an injunction requiring the Department of Corrections to fix the problems and compensation for the officers’ injuries.
The inmate who assaulted the female officer in Yuma last April was sentenced to an additional 11 years in prison. A corrections spokesman said the agency is reviewing the suit and couldn't immediately comment.
