Major League Baseball teams may no longer train in Tucson. But the city is becoming increasingly popular as a training home for international teams.
Three teams from the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol will arrive in Tucson in late February to train for 30 days at Kino Sports Complex.
Visit Tucson’s Dan Gibson said it’s a good faith effort to reach across the border.
“Americans want to have this interact with Mexicans in general, but in particular with these teams. So, it’s a nice boost for our economy, but it’s also a nice message to the people of Mexico that Tucson is welcoming to them," said Gibson.
This will be the second year teams from the Mexican league train at the county sports complex, but this year training and games will not be open to the public.
Gibson said Korean pro teams are also using Tucson’s vacant baseball facilities.
