New standards for the chest protectors young athletes wear will take effect next year. The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment's (NOCSAE) board approved the move Friday in Phoenix .
The goal is to prevent commotio cordis, which is the No. 2 cause of sudden cardiac arrest in the U.S and usually only affects people younger than 20. Dr. Jeff Mjaanes is a physician in Chicago and a Board Member of NOCSAE. He spoke about the change.
