Scottsdale Police Offer Free Breathalyzer Tests At Phoenix Open

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is known for bringing high quality golfers and providing a good time for spectators.

However, the Phoenix Open isn’t just about the golf for many who attend. The 16th hole is known for its ruckus environment.

This year the Scottsdale Police Department is hoping to keep those who may have had one too many drinks off the road.

Scottsdale police Sgt. Ben Hoster said police are offering free breathalyzer tests as people exit the tournament.

“Without the threat of being arrested they can take those tests and see where they’re at, blood alcohol level wise. And sometimes people think that they’re at a certain level and realize they are much higher than they are,” he said.

Sgt. Hoster said they often find people underestimate how much they’ve had to drink and believe they’re able to drive.

“And a lot of times people will think that they’re at a certain level and they’re not. So this gives them a chance to make an educated decision whether or not to drive," he said.

Hoster said over 1,000 people have taken the test so far. One person has even registered at 0.34, which is four times the legal limit.
