Arizona State University unleashed a blast from Arizona's past on Tuesday with the release of more than 4,500 historical photos last week.
ASU Libraries has made available the photography of James Morrison McCulloch and William Patrick McCulloch, commercial photographers who owned a studio in downtown Phoenix.
The images date from 1884 to 1947, a time just before a population influx in the Phoenix area. The photos offer a glimpse of the Valley during a “time of transition from Cowtown to emerging metropolis," Digital Projects Librarian Matthew Harp said in a press release.
The collection is archived in the ASU’s Digital Repository and available free for use in research.
“The opening of this collection in the ASU Digital Repository exemplifies the ASU Libraries commitment to open access,” archivist Rob Spindler, who curates ASU Libraries’ Arizona Collection, said in a release. “With our new Publication and Creative Services, we actively facilitate creative uses of our historical materials in all kinds of historical, cultural and artistic projects.”
