One of the obstacles that usually comes up when people talk about making Arizona more competitive economically is the limited number of universities that are based here.

But in recent years, the Valley has been a comfortable spot in the realm of for-profit education. Two major announcements this month, though, are likely to dramatically change that.

The parent company of the University of Phoenix, the Apollo Group, is moving to go private, and Grand Canyon University, which has been for-profit for more than a decade, may become nonprofit again by this summer.

Arizona State University professor Barry Bozeman studies for-profit education. He spoke about the issue.
