Officials with the Arizona Department of Transportation say the agency is on track to issue federally-compliant driver's licenses beginning in April.
The Legislature passed a law this spring allowing the state to provide optional REAL-ID licenses to residents. The worry was that no Arizona documents would be accepted at airports and other federal buildings if the state didn't comply with national ID standards.
"One major difference is that this new ID is only going to be valid for 8 years," said Ryan Harding, an ADOT spokesman. "As opposed to the current ID which is good until your 65 th birthday."
Once the state begins issuing the documents, current non-compliant licenses will continue to be accepted until 2020.
