The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has seized nearly $6 million worth of drugs since September. The contraband comes from a new operation, “No Bust Too Small,” and focuses on street-level dealers.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio spoke about the operation in a press conference, where he was flanked by bails of meth, pot and heroin. He called on the Mexican government to "knock off the corruption" and give U.S. agents more freedom to fight the drug operations in that country.
"Right now, my message is, Mexico better start doing something. There’s not much I can do as a sheriff other than lock them all up and speak, but something better be done in Mexico," he said. "I can’t even get the council general to answer my letters."
Arpaio also criticized President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry for not speaking to Mexican officials more frequently about the drug problem.
"Instead of roaming around everywhere in the world, make a few trips to Mexico, which is our neighboring country killing our people," Arpaio said. "That’s what they ought to be doing."
While illegal immigration is important, Arpaio said, he's more concerned with illegal drugs crossing the border.
