A new jail could be coming to Prescott.
The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors is considering a $40 million proposal, after a final report from consultant Karen Chinn. She recommends building a 144-bed jail next to the county’s juvenile detention center, a few miles east of downtown.
The Daily Courier reports Chinn told the board it doesn't make sense to renovate the county’s downtown jail, based on the age, condition and available property. The Board of Supervisors did not discuss how it would finance the project.
But back in 2014 board members spoke about the need for a future jail, and said it should be paid for through property tax increases, cash on hand, or cuts in county services.
