More ticket counters, kiosks and escalators are coming to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport's Terminal 3.

Project managers say the first phase of the estimated $590 million modernization program is on time and budget.

The passengers, airlines and concessionaires that use Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are paying for the work. It does not take money out of the city's general fund.

During a recent city meeting, Project Manager Art Fairbanks said the expanded ticket hall at Terminal 3 will feature 66 counters and 48 self-service kiosks.

“All of our customers really enjoy that self-service option to move through the terminal and especially our frequent travelers who know how to move quickly through the kiosks and to their gate," he said. "The airlines have indicated that they’re exploring also self-tagging opportunities to further automate and give that level of service to their passengers.”

A new consolidated security checkpoint will include what they call a ‘"ecomposure area" — a nice place to put your shoes back on. The first phase should be finished this fall.
