Celebrating St. Patrick's Day? Compare Your Spending, Plans

According to the National Retail Federation’s annual St. Patrick's Day survey, more than 125 million Americans will celebrate the holiday, with the average person spending $36.52.

While Saint Patrick’s Day is most popular among the 18 to 24-year-old crowd, with 70 percent celebrating, the survey finds the biggest spenders are those between 25-34 years old at an average of $42.58.

What people are buying:

  • 56.5 percent will buy food or drinks
  • 28 percent will buy apparel or accessories
  • 23.3 percent will buy decorations
  • 17.2 percent will buy candy

What people are doing:

  • 82.1 percent will wear green
  • 31.3 percent will make a special dinner
  • 28.7 will attend a party at a bar or restaurant
  • 21.1 percent will attend a private party
  • 28.8 percent will decorate homes or offices in an Irish theme
