A bill requiring Arizona schools to teach cursive writing has reached Gov. Doug Ducey’s desk.
The measure would require students to show by the end of fifth grade they are able to create readable documents through legible cursive handwriting. Ducey is getting the bill after extensive House debate.
Rep. Kelly Townsend said she supports the merits of cursive writing.
“Are we really wanting to dumb down our students to the point where they can't even read a card in the mail from grandma written in cursive because they've never learned it?” Townsend said.
Those who oppose the bill support students being able to read and write in cursive. But they argue it’s a decision to be made by the Arizona Board of Education, not the Legislature.
The governor has to decide this week whether to sign or veto the measure.
