After years of trying, it looks like downtown will get its first full-service grocery store.
The new 55,000-square-foot Fry's store is expected to be built on a current parking lot between Washington and Jefferson streets, between CityScape and Collier Center.
In a news release, Fry's Food & Drug Stores and RED Development said the grocer would be housed in a proposed mixed-use development that could include residential and office spaces.
The store would be located between major light-rail access points and serve historic neighborhood districts like Garfield, Roosevelt, Eastlake Park and others. With the increase in downtown residential units and the expansion of ASU and UA campuses, a grocery store has been on many people's wish lists.
Fry's and RED Development expect to release more details in the coming months.
RED developed the 1.2 million-square-foot CityScape project on the former site of Heritage Park. The first phase of the restaurant, retail, entertainment and office project opened in 2010.
Fry’s is headquartered in Tolleson. The company says it employs more than 18,000 Arizona residents.
