A monsoon storm about to overtake a Phoenix neighborhood.

Violent dust storms are a common occurrence in Maricopa and Pinal counties during the height of the summer monsoon season.

Dust also blows along a sometimes-treacherous stretch of Interstate 10 in the fall months as well. To make sure drivers have a better idea of what might be in their way, a couple of National Weather Service meteorologists have a developed a dust sensor program.

Ken Waters is one of them; he spoke about the program.
