Navajo leaders have asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the fatal shooting of a Navajo woman by Winslow, Arizona, police.
Although the state police are conducting a local investigation, the Navajo council members wrote in a letter they “firmly believe intervention by the civil rights division is necessary.”Just as it did in the Ferguson, Missouri, shooting.
The council said it has deep concerns about use of excessive force in border towns that surround the Navajo Nation.
DPS authorities said on March 27 Winslow police Officer Austin Shipley responded to a report of shoplifting at a local convenience store.
Police said Loreal Tsingine struggled with Shipley and threatened him with scissors, when he tried to arrest her.
Authorities said Shipley fired five shots at Tsingine, killing her.
