Widow Asks Court For Video Of Mesa Police Officer Killing Her Husband

The widow of an unarmed man shot and killed by a Mesa police officer said the county attorney is violating her rights by refusing to let her view police video of her husband’s death.

Attorneys for Laney Sweet are asking a judge in the case against Mesa Officer Philip Mitchell Brailsford to force prosecutors to give her the body camera video. The attorneys reject an argument by prosecutors that the video of the January shooting should not be publicly released to protect her dignity.

A recording has recently surfaced of a meeting in which Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery told Sweet he could not let her see the video if she was going to describe its contents to news organizations.

Montgomery's office declined to comment on Sweet's filing.
