An officer rides the mounted unit's newest horse, who will be named Friday.

For the first time Tempe Police Department’s mounted unit decided to take name submissions from the public for its newest member.

Oreo took the lead with about 55 submissions, a nod to the horse’s black and white coat. Other submissions included “May The Horse Be With You,” “Tor-Neigh-do” and “Tempe Tantrum.”

“Shotgun” was an officer favorite, if only for the ability to say - “I want to ride shotgun!” And, of course, “Horsey McHorseface” made an appearance - multiple times.

But the department narrowed it down to its three main choices: Zeus, Leo and Rookie.

The public has until Thursday to vote from those three, and they’ll trot out the final name on Friday.
