On this 4/20 day that celebrates the culture of marijuana, supporters of a move to make the stuff recreationally legal in Arizona are celebrating news that the measure appears headed for the November ballot.
But opposition is lining up.
Seth Leibsohn is the chairman of Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy, which is using this day to oppose the idea. “Keeping marijuana illegal has kept its use pretty low, both nationally and particularly here in Arizona," he says. "Where it has been legalized, like Colorado, you do see use go through the roof, particularly teen and adolescent use which is our major concern here.”
While pot is medically legal in the state, Leibsohn argues that any medicine shouldn’t be made available for recreational use.
Backers of a ballot initiative from the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol announced recently that they are well on their way to collecting enough signatures for the measure to appear on the November ballot.
