Earlier this week Leslie Merritt Jr. was released from jail after the judge dropped his bond to zero dollars.
Late Friday afternoon the state filed a motion to drop all charges against Merritt.
He faced more than a dozen felony charges in connection with some of the I-10 shootings last summer.
Prosecutors could refile charges on a later date.
Merritt's defense attorneys have said ballistic tests cast doubt on authorities' claims that he was behind four of the freeway shootings.
Jason Lamm, a defense attorney representing Merritt, did not immediately return messages seeking comment. On his Twitter page, Lamm said that the gag order imposed by a judge is still in place until the charges are formally dismissed.
