Earlier this week Leslie Merritt Jr. was released from jail after the judge dropped his bond to zero dollars.

Late Friday afternoon the state filed a motion to drop all charges against Merritt.

He faced more than a dozen felony charges in connection with some of the I-10 shootings last summer.

Prosecutors could refile charges on a later date.

Maricopa County Attorney's Office spokesman Jerry Cobb said authorities and prosecutors identified additional forensic investigation that needs to be completed in order for the case to proceed.

Merritt's defense attorneys have said ballistic tests cast doubt on authorities' claims that he was behind four of the freeway shootings.

Jason Lamm, a defense attorney representing Merritt, did not immediately return messages seeking comment. On his Twitter page, Lamm said that the gag order imposed by a judge is still in place until the charges are formally dismissed.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
