A bill ending dog racing in Arizona is awaiting Governor Ducey’s signature, possibly this week. That also means finding new homes for hundreds of greyhounds.
The bill that would end live dog racing at the state’s only remaining dog track in Tucson at the end of 2016.
KGUN-TV reports that kennels with dogs racing at the Tucson Greyhound Park are seeking adoptive or foster homes for between 300 and 400 greyhounds.
According to the website for, GREY2K USA Worldwide, an organization working to ban dog racing, there are 19 dog tracks in this country, including the one in Tucson.
Concerns about the treatment of the dogs plus competition from state lotteries and tribal casinos have cut into attendance and profits, according to industry observers.
