The Arizona Board of Education and Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas have resolved their ongoing litigation. The two parties had been at odds since February 2015 when Douglas tried to fire the board’s executive staff.
Officials with the Department of Education and the Arizona Board of Education say pending legislation would eliminate the need for further legal proceedings.
Charles Tack is a spokesman with the Arizona Department of Education. He said an amendment to HB 2620 was designed to be a compromise.
"We were able to come to an agreement that the board is able to oversee their four employees and that we can oversee the work of the investigators," he said. "And we can move forward and save money by discontinuing both lawsuits."
In addition to clarifying organizational roles, the measure would also add a fourth lay member to the 11-member Board of Education.
