Arizona banned the sale of e-cigarettes to people under the age of 18 in 2013. On Thursday, the Federal Food and Drug Administration did the same on a national level, as well as creating the ability to regulate the ingredients in the liquid solution used in e-cigarettes which contain nicotine.
Dr. Frank LoVecchio, with Arizona’s Banner Health Poison and Drug Information Center, said the FDA regulation is a welcome one.
“The way the delivery devices are set up, sure they’re liquid nicotine in it, but what concentration? What are the other products? So, as a toxicologist, I think it was very important that they were involved in this,” he said.
Dr. LoVecchio said the chemicals in liquid used in e-cigarettes can be harmful. But he said more studies need to be done to understand all their potential health side affects.
