Millions of Americans will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a lot of partying while wearing sombreros and fake mustaches — and that has made many people of Mexican descent feel disrespected by this form of cultural appropriation.
The group MEChA de Brown at Brown University is trying to get people to think more about the true history and meaning of Cinco de Mayo.
As part of that, they’ve introduced the hashtag #reclaimcinco. To learn more, we talked to Katherine Chavez, she’s on the executive team of MEChA de Brown.
