The Arizona Department of Transportation and Arizona Department of Safety is prepared to shut down a 62-mile stretch of Interstate 10 on the Arizona-New Mexico Border, again.
That same section of highway has already been closed four times in the past two weeks following multiple accidents after blowing dust reduced visibility dramatically. The latest closure began Friday morning.
Garrin Groff with ADOT said he understands it’s an inconvenience. But it’s for the drivers safety.
“There is a blowing dust advisory in affect today to 8 p.m. So, anyone who might travel through that area should be aware that there could be a closure,” Groff said.
Planned detours will take traffic on a 110 mile route through Safford, Arizona.
Dangerous dust conditions triggered a three-vehicle crash involving two semitrailers about 15 miles from the New Mexico border on April 25 and three separate accidents involving 12 vehicles April 28.
