State transportation officials will be taking a closer look at dirt and soil in the southwest valley as their next step in the Loop 202 extension project.
It’s officially known as a geotechnical investigation. The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin their study of the ground underneath the future Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway on Tuesday.
ADOT spokesman Dustin Krugel said the goal is to ensure structural stability of the road and its roughly 45 bridges.
"We have to make sure that that foundation is strong," he explained. "So we have to do this analysis beforehand to ensure we know what we’re building on top of."
The investigation is projected to last several months.
