Hunting Meteorites On Tonto National Forest? There Are Rules

Possible pieces of a meteor fell over a region of eastern Arizona early Thursday morning. NASA radar shows the potential meteorites may have fallen somewhere into the Tonto National Forest.

Carrie Templin, spokeswoman for Tonto National Forest, said meteorite hunters visiting the forest need to follow rules.

“If it’s for commercial use, if they’re wanting to find something that they would want to sell, they would need to obtain a permit for that purpose.”

Templin said you can search for the stones. However, digging with shovels or picks is not permitted.

There is no confirmation meteorites from Thursday’s event have been found.
