That drive to Los Angeles on Interstate 10 could soon become more pleasant thanks to a new partnership. The effort is known as the I-10 Corridor Coalition.
The agreement was signed by officials in Arizona, New Mexico, California and Texas. It was modeled after the program that currently governs the 15 state I-95 corridor on the East Coast.
"You know states often have different regulations," explained Tom Herman, a spokesman with the Arizona Department of Transportation. "We do things one way. New Mexico might do them a little differently. And if we can work together and find the best way to do it and then share that we can make things more efficient for everybody."
Herman added the arrangement would also allow the agencies to partner up for road construction projects, an activity that could end up saving states money through economies of scale. Firming up those plans is down the road though, until state officials meet up for their first planning meeting.
