Ecuador and Peru face off at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the second of three Copa America Centenario games that will be played in the West Valley, and emergency responders have warned fans to be prepared for scorching temperatures.
Wednesday’s high temperature in Glendale will be about 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. With the Futbol Fiesta starting at 4 p.m. at Westgate, fans will gather at the hottest time of day.
Record-breaking temps for Sunday’s Copa America match between Mexico and Uruguay led to Glendale firefighters treating about 75 people with symptoms of heat exhaustion. Eleven had to be hospitalized.
Fans should stay hydrated and avoid activity before the match, even if they’re just spectating, said Glendale Fire Capt. Michael Young.
“Do not exercise before tailgating or going to the game,” Young said. “Avoid any caffeine, alcohol and large amounts of sugar. Those things dehydrate you. And never leave anyone, a child or pet, inside an unattended vehicle.
Rush hour drivers should expect heavy traffic on the Loop 101 near University of Phoenix Stadium, as well as on Bethany Home Road and Glendale Avenue between the freeway and 91st Avenue.
