The Arizona Attorney General’s office has confirmed that political candidates can only erect campaign signs 60 days ahead of an election. The informal legal opinion was issued after some argued that 60 day countdown should start when voters receive early ballots.
The challenge go the state law was raised by Rep. Kelly Townsend who pointed out that early ballots go out about a month ahead of the actual primary.
According to Attorney General Mark Brnovich's office, that interpretation of the law doesn’t work and it “manufactures ambiguity.”
The opinion also pointed out that the law governs both the period before and after an election a sign can stay up. If the date was calculated when early ballots are received that could result in signs being taken down before an actual election date.
