Injunction Sought Against Arizona In Voter Rights Case

Lines like this one at the polling place in Papago Park in Phoenix wrapped on for hours during the 2016 Presidential Preference Election.

The Democratic National Committee, a plaintiff in a lawsuit accusing Arizona of voter supression during the state’s Presidential Preference Election, has asked a federal judge to issue a preliminary injunction against the state.

In one of two memos filed June 10, plaintiffs essentially asked a judge to do what the U.S. Department of Justice did to oversee elections before the Supreme Court overturned part of the Voting Rights Act in 2013.

They want Maricopa County officials to explain the plan to have 724 polling places for the November election and they want valid votes on provisional ballots cast out-of-precinct to count.

In the second memo, plaintiffs asked the judge to stop Arizona’s so-called ballot harvesting law from taking effect, arguing that collecting ballots has, in the past, benefitted minority voters without secure mailboxes or transportation to the polls.
