Cedar Fire Grows To 26,000 Acres, Extreme Weekend Weather To Blame

Shifting wind patterns and record heat are partly to blame as the Cedar Fire burning near Show Low grew by 14,000 acres Sunday.

The wildfire has now burned over 26,000 acres. Despite the significant growth Sunday, fire officials say no firefighter injuries were reported.

Cedar Fire public information officer Rita Baysinger says today’s forecast looks a little more favorable for firefighting— "With the winds shifting back north there is likely to be a little bit of spread on either side of the main fire but they’re not anticipating anything like they saw yesterday with this push to the south."

The White Mountain Apache reservation and the community of Cedar Creek have been put under a pre-evacuation order. But Baysinger adds, full evacuations will likely not be needed.

The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation.
