Wildfire Puts Small Community On Pre-evacuation Alert

A small community south of Show Low has been put on pre-evacuation orders because a wildfire has crept within a few miles. The Cedar Fire has burned nearly 27,000 and is 40 percent contained.

The 300 people who live in the community of Cedar Creek are on alert, and an evacuation center has been set up at a nearby high school. Livestock can be taken to local fairgrounds. Fire crews have been working through the night to cordon off the Cedar Fire, burning on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, after it recently doubled in size.

Multi-agency operations chief Todd Abel said the blaze is not moving quickly toward Cedar Creek because of sparse vegetation and shifting winds, but extremely high temperatures and low humidity may contribute to the continued spread of the fire.
