Granite Mountain Memorial State Park Receives Cash Infusion

The Granite Mountain Hotshot Memorial State Park received a significant cash infusion today. Utility company Arizona Public Service presented officials with a $229,000 donation to help them complete the project.

The park will commemorate the 19 firefighters who died in 2013 while fighting the Yarnell Hill fire.

When completed, the area just off of Highway 89 A near Prescott will be Arizona’s first memorial state park.

Sue Black, the executive director of the Arizona State Park system, said the donation will help crews finish elements such as signage and an observation deck.

"It’s really telling the story at this point," she explained. "Because I think the bones of the park are completed, but now I think we’ll be able to do the interpretation to be able to tell everyone what happened on the site and to have those other elements."

The park is expected to open to the public in November.
