Berms, Vegetation Could Help Keep The Dust Down

A dust storm rolls in over downtown Phoenix on June 23, 2016.

The Arizona monsoon season officially started last week and a dose of dust was unleashed on downtown Phoenix Thursday.

That dust, especially with the most violent storms, causes dangerous conditions on the freeways—especially on I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix. So when you have unpredictable weather, how do you keep the dust from getting out of hand and reducing visibility to nil?

Professor Eric Betterton, the head of the University of Arizona’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences, said solutions could range from berms to vegetation.
