The impact of so-called dark money has been increasing across the country, as campaign donors have been able to keep themselves anonymous and the prevalence of independent expenditures groups has grown. A new reportby the non-partisan Brennan Center for Justice focuses on six states— including Arizona— and looks at dark money spending since the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United.
The report also looks at "gray money," or money where the direct donor identity is shielded by other groups.
"Technically, they have disclosed their donors, but it doesn't tell the voters anything meaningful about where the money originally came from," said Chisun Lee, a senior counsel at the Brennan Center and an author of the report.
