Many non-profit arts companies across the country have run into serious financial problems since the Great Recession. Some have struggled getting audiences back, while others have seen corporate support dry up.
Arizona Theatre Company, which produces its plays in downtown Phoenix at the Herberger Theatre Center and in Tucson, needs to raise $2 million by July 1.
"I don't think since 1988 have we gone to the public and said 'you really need to step up or Arizona Theatre Company could really not be here,'" said longtime Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein.
Without that influx of cash, the company may have to cancel its upcoming season and potentially take even more dramatic steps.
