Peoria firefighters rescued a free-climber early Monday morning, while divers have recovered the body of a man who disappeared at Apache Lake on Sunday.

A 35-year-old man fell several stories while climbing without ropes on Calderwood Butte in the northwest Valley, said Peoria Fire-Medical Department spokesperson Tim Eiden. A bystander called 911, and the climber was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

About 100 miles east of there, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said they’ve found the body of a 37-year-old Tucson man who disappeared while swimming in the middle of the night on Sunday.

Witnesses tried to help the man, identified by police as Rodolfo Ruiz, when they saw him struggling to breathe and stay above water.

Investigators say a family member reported that Ruiz had been drinking and using drugs all day.
