Arizona, like most Western states, is undergoing a dramatic demographic shift. More young people of color are either being born here or are moving here from other places in the country and around the world. And the state has the greatest example of what’s known as the racial generation gap. The population age 55 and older is 77 percent white, while the population 35 and younger is 43 percent white.

William H. Frey is a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program and author of Diversity Explosion: How New Racial Demographics Are Remaking America.
