Frida Kahlo

Legendary artist Frida Kahlo was born 109 years ago on July 6 in Mexico. She was especially well-known for her self-portraits. Her huge impact on art, particularly in the Southwest, continues to this day.

"I paint myself because I'm so often alone and because I'm the subject I know best," is a quote attribtued to Kahlo.

We learned more about her legacy and the Fiesta de Frida Saturday at the Heard Museum from Carmen Guerrero, a member of the Phoenix Fridas, who sometimes refer to Kahlo as the "first selfie artist" for her portraits.

"She's a feminine icon," Guerrero said. "We don't have very many of them. Most of our leaders are male and Frida breaks the mold completely."

Steve Goldstein was a host at KJZZ from 1997 to 2022.
