There are, in this country, between 15,000 and 18,000 police departments. Those agencies come in different sizes and have different resources.
What if that number was lower?
Alex Weiss thinks it could be. He has a consulting firm in Chicago that works with state and local law enforcement agencies. He’s also an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Michigan State University, where he’s part of the program on Consolidation and Shared Services in Law Enforcement.
But not everyone thinks consolidation is the answer. The Show’s Lauren Gilger spoke with Charles Katz, a professor in Arizona State University’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, who says our law enforcement system was developed purposefully to be fragmented.
