Phoenix is among the cities leading the way in what’s called the circular economy. It’s working with ASU and a non-profit to increase its work on the concept.

John Trujillo, Phoenix’s public works director, explains in an ideal circular economy, waste does not exist and everything can be made into something new.

"Our goal is to keep the material here locally," Trujillo said. Right now, much of it goes to China or to a landfill in Buckeye.
