The growth of the Fuller Fire burning near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon has been fueled by strong winds and low humidity. The fire has now grown to 13,685 acres.
Fire management spokesperson Bernie Pineda said containment of the fire has been slow as firefighters are working against high winds and risky weather conditions.
“One portion of the perimeter of the fire was a bit too much in terms of trying to be safe,” he said. “And so we ended up pulling all our crews assigned to that part of the fire until we deemed where the weather settled down so we could get back in there.”
The lightening-caused fire has been burning for nearly three weeks. There is no formal containment.
The lodge and other facilities at the North Rim's village remain open. But the fire continues to prevent access to the popular Point Imperial and Cape Royal viewpoints along the North Rim.
