Grand Canyon National Park has named a new superintendent, months after the park’s former leader retired amid controversy. Christine Lehnertz will take the park’s helm next month.
She will replace Dave Uberuaga, who chose to retire earlier this year rather than be transferred. A federal report released in January found that male park employees harassed female colleagues during trips the agency led on the Colorado River. Uberuaga was not implicated in any allegations, but federal investigators accused him of failing to adequately look into and report sexual harassment claims.
Lehnertz said Grand Canyon National Park now has a responsibility to help the park service eliminate the factors that lead to sexual harassment. Lehnertz has been overseeing Golden Gate National Recreation Area in California for the past year and has been with the National Park Service for nine years.
