Loreal Tsingine died in March, after being shot by a Winslow Police Officer Austin Shipley. Shipley will not face charges.

No charges will be filed against the Winslow Police officer who fatally shot a Navajo woman in March. The shooting caused outcry across the Navajo Nation.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said Winslow Police Officer Austin Shipley will not face charges in the death of 27-year-old Loreal Tsingine. Shipley shot five times at Tsingine, after responding to a report of shoplifting at a Winslow convenience store March 27. Shipley said Tsingine had threatened him with scissors while he was trying to arrest her.

There was immediate outcry from the local Native American community, and leader of the Navajo Nation called for a U.S. Justice Department investigation. Earlier this month, Tsingine’s family filed a $10.5 million notice of claim against the Winslow Police Department.
